WARNING

DIOXIN FOUND IN BEN AND JERRY'S ICE CREAM

What the hell is it, and why should I care?

Dioxin is one of the most toxic chemicals known. A draft report released for public comment in September 1994 by the US Environmental Protection Agency clearly describes dioxin as a serious public health threat. The public health impact of dioxin may rival the impact that DDT had on public health in the 1960's. According to the EPA report, not only does there appear to be no "safe" level of exposure to dioxin, but levels of dioxin and dioxin-like chemicals have been found in the general US population that are "at or near levels associated with adverse health effects." The EPA report confirmed that dioxin is a cancer hazard to people; that exposure to dioxin can also cause severe reproductive and developmental problems (at levels 100 times lower than those associated with its cancer causing effects); and that dioxin can cause immune system damage and interfere with regulatory hormones.

May contain DIOXIN

Worlds Best Vanilla my ass! Tell it to the 200+ peeps how got cancer from it!

What's going on with Ben and Jerry's?

A sample of Ben & Jerry's "World's Best Vanilla"® ice cream was tested for the presence of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and related chemicals ("dioxin") by an independent laboratory. On a total weight basis, the sample tested had 0.79 ± 0.38 parts per trillion (ppt) Toxic Equivalents (TEQ) of dioxin. The concentration of dioxin in the sample's lipids was 5.1 ± 1.3 ppt TEQ. Ben & Jerry's Homemade Holdings, Inc. states in promotional literature that "The only safe level of dioxin exposure is no exposure at all." Assuming the measurement is correct and sample tested is representative of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and based on U.S. Government information about the potential health effects of dioxin, Ben & Jerry's ice cream may cause about two hundred of cases of cancer among its consumers. 80 trillionth of a gram is 200 times greater then the level the EPA says is 'safe'.

Being sued is the the Tosco Corp.'s, where  refinery discharges were found to contain illegal amounts of the dangerous chemical dioxin into San Francisco Bay, a group spokesman said. Communities for a Better Environment and San Francisco BayKeeper allege that Tosco violates the U.S. Clean Water Act by 'routinely' discharging some 20 times more dioxin than allowed by a state permit,' reports Reuters. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows the Tosco refinery to discharge waste water containing 0.14 trillionths of a gram of dioxin per liter. Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream contains 570 times more dioxin then a liter of Tosco refinery effluent. The pinnacle of hypocrisy! San Fransisco Has 8 Ben and Jerry's, why aren't they sued?

Where can I get some of this great Dioxin?

The major sources of dioxin are in our diet. Since dioxin is fat-soluble, it bioaccumulates up the food chain and it is mainly (97.5%) found in meat and dairy products (beef, dairy products, milk, chicken, pork, fish and eggs in that order... see chart below). In fish alone, these toxins bioaccumulate up the food chain so that dioxin levels in fish are 100,000 times that of the surrounding environment.

What health issues does dioxin cause?

-Sperm count in men worldwide has dropped to 50% of what it was 50 years ago.

-The incidence of testicular cancer has tripled in the last 50 years, and prostate cancer has doubled.

-Endometriosis - the painful growth outside the uterus of cells that normally line the uterus - -which was formerly a rare condition, now afflicts 5 million American women.

-In 1960, a woman's chance of developing breast cancer during her lifetime was one in 20. Today the chances are one in eight.

I don't understand what's going on, is there a chart I can look at?

So, what did Ben & Jerry's say to these accusations?

Hello! Thanks for contacting us. We assume that you are referring to the "Junk Science" report, and we appreciate the opportunity to respond to their comments.

In their statement, "junk" scientists Milloy and Gough suggest that Ben & Jerry's has been hypocritical by taking a very public stance on the dangers of dioxin.

According to experts, there's no food group that's safe from the harmful effects of chemicals like dioxin, which make their way into the food chain through industrial emissions into our air, soil and water. While Ben & Jerry's may not directly control these dioxin emissions, we do know that a reduced reliance on chlorine as a bleaching agent will lead to a reduction in dioxin releases from paper mills to our water ways.

That's why we're taking steps as a small Vermont company to make an impact where we can by converting our pint packaging to unbleached paperboard. We encourage consumers to check with the Environmental Protection Agency and Green peace for the facts on dioxin.

Ben & Jerry's

Any other health risks I should know about before going to Ben and Jerry's?

The whipped cream could contain a genetically altered drug designed to increase milk production. According to several scientific studies, it is considered a serious risk factor for increased breast, colon and prostate cancers.

So, with the increased risk of prostate and breast cancer from both the whipped cream AND the ice cream, what should I do?

Eric's team shouldn't go to the vermonster contest, It's a health risk (we want Eric to live a long time and have as many lil' Eric rowers as we can, thank me latter). Everyone else can go.
